Music
The Kodaly Curriculum is taught in the Valley View Elementary School Music Department with an emphasis on developing the child’s voice, learning to read and write music, playing percussion instruments, engaging in movement activities and developing an appreciation for music. The school uses Kodaly resources and Spotlight on Music Textbooks by the Houghton Mifflin Publishing Company. World music hand drumming is also taught in grades 3-4-5. Students learn percussion technique and rhythmic patterns as an extension of the curriculum. Students meet with the music teacher two times a week for 30 minute periods. Students in grades 4-5 have the opportunity to participate in a Winter Musical in December. The Fifth Grade Tone Chime Choir is also featured in the Winter Musical. In May, the Intermediate Choir and Tone Chime Choir perform in a Spring Concert.
