Communication Arts
Sixth Grade Communication Arts class emphasizes five areas: 1) reading, 2) writing, 3) speaking 4) listening and 5) computer literacy. Using a balanced literacy approach, teachers implement read aloud, shared reading, guided reading, and independent reading strategies. Writing is taught and analyzed via the six traits of effective writing and the writing process approach. Grammar and spelling are also inherent components of our writing program. Students gain experience with descriptive, narrative, informative, and persuasive writing throughout the year via diverse approaches including Writer’s Workshop, simulations, and required writing pieces. A variety of informal and formal speaking opportunities are provided, including a How-To speech and Reader’s Theater. Listening skills are assessed throughout the year as part of our reading program and as an integral part to most activities. Finally, students practice word processing and receive web-based instruction as part of communication arts.
